A new mathematical equation for physics was recently discovered by UCLA mathematician and professor Terence Tao, and three physicists.

The team discovered an equation that simplifies the previously very long calculation of a mathematical statistic called an eigenvector.

The three physicists, Peter Denton, Stephen Parke and Xining Zhang, were working on a problem that involves neutrino scattering behavior. Neutrinos are known to be fundamental subatomic particles that exist in three leptonic types: electron, muon and tau. They are, in many ways, the least understood fundamental particles, said Denton, a physicist at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
